Conversion Factors & Formulas

STEP 1:

To convert to the desired units, go to the appropriate table.

STEP 2:

Go to the column of known units down to the cell with a one (1).

STEP 3:

Go across to the column of the desired units.

STEP 4:

Multiply known units by this factor to obtain the number with the desired units.

Example: Convert energy of 15 kW to BTU/Hr

Example: Convert energy of 15 km to BTU/Hr

Air Velocity & Air Flow

To determine air velocity in Feet/Minute (FPM) through the heat exchanger from known air flow in Feet3/ Minute (CFM):
  Air Flow (CFM)
Air Velocity(FPM) = ---------------------------------------------------------------
Heat Exchanger Finned Core Area (Feet2)

Altitude Adjustment

Performance Curves are based on sea-level conditions. Derate heat transfer performance for tube and fin heat exchangers by 2.5% for every 1000-foot gain in altitude.

Helpful Hint

3.5 BTU/Hr are required to raise one gallon of oil 1 in 10 F hour.
